The Story of Roads and Rails Museum

"I've had a lot of people ask me how this all started. So here is the short version. I grew up in a family of model railroaders. My father David and my brothers David and John are all model railroaders. A few years ago my father was transitioning into retirement. He had just sold his computer company,Visual One systems, that he started back in the 1970s. He was planing on buying a barn somewhere in Frederick and filling it with classic cars as well as constructing a giant model railroad display. He was going to open it up to public seasonally. It sounded like a great retirement. But then the old entrepreneur in him thought, "Why don't I open it up to the public and charge admission?" Not long after that it started to become a family business. I left my job working in the stock footage department for the Discovery Channel. My brother John was living in Hollywood working in set design and special effects. He jumped at the chance to come back home and work on this project. My brother David was a computer programmer working for the company that my father had sold. Not wanting to miss out on the opportunity to take part in this endeavor, he put his career on hold and joined us full time. For the next three years, along with my father and two other craftsmen, we constructed one of the largest O scale Model Railroads in the country. And during that time we collected some very rare "orphan" cars of the post WW2 era to put on display in our museum. Roads and Rails Museum, named by my mother Mary, is truly a family business and a dream realized "
